Michael Jackson – one year anniversary

MJ’s CD covers…

June 25 was a sad day. It was the anniversary of Michael Jackson’s death. Yes, already one year…

I have been a fan for years. In fact, I was listening to MJ’s songs before knowing enough English to understand the words, as a teenage in Switzerland. Some of his CDs have followed me in Switzerland and Japan, for over 15 years…

Around 1993-1995, MJ was planning to come and give a concert in Basel, Switzerland. I had bought tickets and was very much looking forward the concert. It was eventually canceled at the last minute. I was soooo disappointed.

Fast forward a few years later, in 1996 in Tokyo. One of my Japanese colleagues told me that MJ was coming to Tokyo. As soon as I heard that information, I could not rest until I got a ticket. Luckily, it was not yet sold out… I went to the concert and felt so happy to finally be able to see him performing live. I remember smiling during the whole concert.

It is a pity that it was my first and last chance to go to one of his concerts…

The person may have been at times a little too much, to say the least.

However, the artist was just… so incredibly gifted. He had true talents for music, words, dance. Now, being so talented does not mean that life gets any easier… And, if anything else, MJ showed us how difficult it is to “have been” a great star and sold millions of albums. And spend the rest of one’s life trying to do it again. Or better.

And the irony is… based on Wikipedia, since his death, “Jackson became the best-selling artist of 2009 in the United States selling over 8.2 million albums and had sold 35 million albums worldwide in the 12 months that followed his death.”

Here in Japan, there were some special shows on TV (Wowow and Fox, to mention a few).

MJ is gone, but his legacy is well alive… Will we all be able to say the same, someday ?

Now, as for using MJ to improve one’s English…
